Manufacturing Odds and Ends

Odds and Ends

2013 - 2014

This is a small portfolio showcasing my newbie manufacturing projects. These are some of the first parts I ever made and some are still on my desk!

The Little Man is my mechanical engineering block buddy. He was my first ever machined part and was built using simple mill and drill press techniques.

Next up was the air cannon which could use pressurized air to shoot foam darts. The cannon was a little harder and was built with a lathe and sheet metal shear/brake.

Then I moved on to the Turner's Cube, the most beautiful paperweight I've ever made. To manufacture it, I had to use precise milling techniques and fixtures to achieve the repeating pattern.

After completing these tasks, I was ready to make actual parts for the UCLA Racing team. The first parts I made were tie rods with adjustment bolts, used as steering rods to adjust between toe-in and toe-out steering. The tie rods were pretty simple, but needed a precision reamer for the internal diameter to create a perfect slip fit for the adjustment bolts. The adjustment bolts were a little tricky since I needed to use both the mill and lathe, and had to create the fillet on the bolt head (for welding) using a manual lathe!
